Big In Bombay

22 Jan 2005 - 14 Feb 2007

A waiting room that, at first glance, looks like any other waiting room in the world. People are standing, waiting and killing time. Each of them shares this waiting time with strangers. An eclectic mix of pop music, political slogans, consumer illusions, Bollywood choreography and soap operas kicks off the Bollywood tradition. Everything you discover here as new is already established in other parts of the world. Slogans like no pasarán only decorate Che Guevara t-shirts, their meaning is completely lost. Although all the people are in one corner, they seem to exist in different parts of the world. Perhaps it’s all just the result of individual imagination. This is where the paranoia begins. Their respective worlds hold them captive in their state of anxiety, their mental leaps and their guilty conscience. Why is nothing happening to me, when everything is going wrong in the world around me? Time speeds up or stops. Everyone is desperately trying to stand out from the crowd, to escape their own reality and cultural identity. We appropriate contexts, identities and images only to find that everyone else is doing the same. Everyone knew everything from the beginning, and we didn’t know each other before?
